DILLON, Colo. – In our work with Van of Valor, we travel the country to honor the stories of our nation’s veterans.
It’s a mission born from service and sacrifice, one that is often emotionally taxing and financially unrewarding. But every so often, we receive a message that cuts through the heartache and reaffirms the profound importance of our mission.
She wrote to us after reading a partially written book Lauren had written about Dennis and a fascinating connection to a former Miss Universe. Her words were not just feedback; they were a validation of memory itself.
“We were blown away by the quality of your writing and the fact that you would take the time to do this,” Lou Anne shared. “It’s a beautiful story and it brought me to tears. We both agree that you totally captured the essence of Dennis and his patriotism.”
But it was her next insight that truly encapsulates why this work is so vital. She noted, “although you may have made him out to be a little more of a saint than what he actually was. Ron said he was always a jokester looking to have fun but he took his duties very seriously.”
This is the sacred trust we are granted. To the world, Lieutenant Peek was a brave Marine. To his family, he was also Dennis — the jokester, the kid on the farm, a whole person whose memory is cherished in its full, vibrant, and wonderfully human complexity. Our goal is never to create statues, but to resurrect the living, breathing individuals behind the service.
Lou Anne concluded with a sentiment that fuels our journey: “We both agree you have done Dennis proud, and he’d be grinning from ear to ear just reading this.”
This is what it’s all about. There is no glory and no pay in what we do, but there is immense purpose.
It is in responses like this that we know a story, once at risk of fading, has been returned to its family. A hero’s legacy is not just preserved in official records, but is now alive in the hearts of all who read it, remembering Dennis not only for how he died, but for who he was.
Lauren’s deep investigative dive into Lieutenant Peek’s full story will be featured in a book she is currently writing. Until then, we are honored to carry these stories with us, and we are deeply grateful for your support in following our journey.
