NORTH PORT, Fla. — A local anthropologist and community advocate is calling for the City of North Port to halt its ongoing logo redesign process, calling it a rushed and divisive exercise that fails to represent the city’s unique identity.

Lauren Wallace, an anthropologist and cofounder of the City’s sponsored Van of Valor, has formally urged city commissioners to pause the current vote, arguing the proposed designs are a “generic imposition.”

“Residents are being asked to choose the ‘best of the least best options,’” Wallace stated. “This process has created division rather than unity.”

In her appeal, Wallace criticized the proposed symbols, including a 12-pointed star and impersonal water imagery, for overlooking what truly defines North Port. She emphasized the city’s distinct character as a Purple Heart City, its ecological assets like mineral springs and sandhill cranes, and its community spirit.

“A city’s logo is its flag—it should tell North Port’s true story and unite residents behind a shared identity,” Wallace said.

Wallace advocates for a complete reset and proposes a more inclusive, community-driven approach. Her recommendations include youth design contests, public workshops, and collaborations with local artists and historians to ensure the final symbol reflects authentic local pride.

“North Port deserves a symbol born from its heart and heritage, not from a rushed timeline,” she stated.

Her message concludes with a call for unity and thoughtful action: “By taking the time to engage residents meaningfully, the city can build trust and create a logo that everyone can recognize and proudly share for generations to come.”
