NORTH PORT, Fla. – In an unprecedented pilgrimage, the Van of Valor is scheduled to connect the entire CONUS Purple Heart Trail in North Florida, December 2, 2025, before being retired to North Port later in the month.
To date, that will be the first time the trail was ever attempted to be driven seamlessly.
To complete the pilgrimage, the Van of Valor team drove 27,106 miles to every corner of the continental United States, without a day off for nine months, to weave the symbolic path together not with pavement, but with the personal stories of sacrifice it represents.
For 280 consecutive days, the rolling memorial — a project led by Purple Heart recipient Dr. Kevin Wallace and his wife, anthropologist and graduate student Lauren Wallace — traversed the nation’s highways, byways, and almost by boat to remote Angle Inlet, Minn.
Their mission was to chronicle the human narrative of the trail, conducting hundreds of interviews with Gold Star families and Purple Heart Veterans from World War II to the present. They spoke not only to combat-wounded Veterans, but to many unique and valorous stories – many still to be written.
The Purple Heart Trail, a symbolic network of roads and monuments established in 1992, spans from Mount Vernon, Va, to California. The Van of Valor team brought this honorary pathway to life, visiting designated sites and communities to collect the raw, first-hand accounts of combat trauma and loss that give the trail its true meaning.
“The names on this van are a promise to remember,” said Dr. Wallace. “Our duty was to ensure their sacrifice is a living, breathing lesson for the nation.”
The journey, which is scheduled to conclude on December 18, 2025, was fraught with challenges, including four major breakdowns. Yet, the couple persevered, completing 312 interviews to honor 400 fallen heroes.
With the road mission complete, the van will retire in North Port where the Wallaces hope to establish a free, permanent museum. The couple’s next chapter is to compile the stories into a book for America’s 250th birthday, ensuring the legacy of the Purple Heart Trail continues to educate and inspire for generations to come.
