We have some tough news to share with you all, our incredible family who has supported this mission from the beginning. Our beloved Van of Valor, which has been our home and our heartbeat on the road, has broken down. The repairs needed are more than the van is worth, and we will soon have to make the heartbreaking decision to retire it from the road.
This hurts. This van isn’t just metal and rubber. It’s a sanctuary and a rolling tribute. Every scratch on its surface and every name on its side tells a story of ultimate sacrifice. It has been a profound privilege to carry these heroes with us.
But the mission does not end here.
Lauren and I have a vision to complete the mission first in a rental car, and later in my truck; and then to honor the Van of Valor and its sacred cargo forever. We are making plans to bring the Van of Valor to Florida, to be the heart of a permanent museum. Our dream is to create a space where the van itself can be the first exhibit—where people can come, touch the names of the fallen, and listen to the stories we’ve gathered in the very vehicle that carried them.
Our inspiration clearly came from Standin’ Proud Veterans Tribute in Bartelso, IL, where Carl’s Four Wheel Drive & Performance Center, the Zahn family, and others gave us the place and “space” for the intimate interviews we conducted with the Peak family and many others (still to come, void one… that’s how personal this stuff gets.)
The Van of Valor’s journey on the open road is likely over, but its eternal journey as a place of remembrance and education is just beginning. We hope you’ll follow us, and support us, as we build this lasting memorial to our heroes. Also, don’t expect a single change in our commitment or forthcoming stories of Valor. We are still 100% in!
Please share your favorite memory of the van in the comments. Let’s fill this space with love for what it has accomplished.
