“BLIND, BURNED OVER 65% OF HIS BODY, MISSING A LEG โ AND HE TOOK US FOR ICE CREAM”
Joel Tavera Survived an Iranian Rocket in Iraq and Became a Living Miracle
TAMPA, FL โ The 122mm rocket scored a direct hit on his vehicle. Three of his comrades died instantly. Joel Tavera was thrown from the burning vehicle, his body on fire, his world gone dark.
He sustained burns over 65 percent of his body. Lost his sight. Suffered a traumatic brain injury. Lost both eardrums. Lost a leg below the knee.
He was one of the most severely wounded soldiers to ever survive the Iraq War.
Today, Joel Tavera doesn’t live in bitterness. He lives with purpose. “I live my life because they can’t live theirs,” he said. “The guys who didn’t make it, I carry them with me every day.”
Before the Van of Valor left Tampa, the blind, amputee veteran insisted on taking the team for ice cream. He walked into that shop like he owned the place, made the owner laugh until he cried, and ordered for everyone.
