VIETNAM VETERAN’S LIFE SAVED BY BORROWED FLAK JACKET – THEN AMERICA SPAT ON HIM
Van of Valor Reveals the Untold Sacrifice of Thomas E. Higgins
MANTEO, NC – The shrapnel shredded the left side of his jacket. Metal buried itself in his arm. Thomas E. Higgins should have died in that armored personnel carrier on Route 1, Vietnam, in May 1965.
But he didn’t. Because a buddy had lent him a flak jacket.
Decades later, Higgins still carries the shrapnel. Still carries the heart damage from Agent Orange—over 54,000 gallons sprayed near his base. Still carries the memory of coming home to professors who called his service “poison.”
“That was the worst experience of my life, coming home,” Higgins told the Van of Valor team. “When people thank me now, I tell them: It’s not about me. It’s about the people on The Wall who never made it home.”
