“TO BE HONEST WITH YOU, THAT’S MY JOB”: EOD TECHNICIAN WALKED THROUGH 40-50 IEDS, WOUNDED TWICE, AND EARNED THE DISTINGUISHED SERVICE CROSS
Sergeant First Class Jeffrey Dawson Disarmed Bombs in Kandahar While Comrades Fell Around Him
KANDAHAR, AFGHANISTAN β October 5, 2013. The enemy waited for the soldiers to get into position. Then they armed dozens of pressure plate IEDs simultaneously.
When it was over, four US service members were dead. Six were severely wounded, including multiple amputations.
Total Purple Hearts awarded from that single engagement: twenty-eight.
Sergeant First Class Jeffrey Dawson was the sole EOD technician on the ground for much of the engagement. He was responsible for clearing routes, evacuating casualties, and identifying IEDs in a hundred-meter area riddled with an estimated forty to fifty bombs.
He was wounded twice. He kept working. He applied tourniquets. Cleared paths for medevac. Ensured the safety of remaining personnel.
When asked about that night, Dawson said: “To be honest with you, that’s my job. I was just reacting.”
