“YOU NEVER RISE TO THE OCCASION. YOU ALWAYS FALL BACK ON TRAINING.”
Staff Sergeant Thomas Waterman Survived Bala Murghab—The “Valley of Death” That Claimed So Many
BALA MURGHAB, AFGHANISTAN – The geography itself was an adversary. Coalition outposts carved into indefensible slopes. Soldiers digging trenches by hand under cover of darkness. Enemy fire at sunrise. WWI-style trench warfare in the 21st century.
This was Bala Murghab. The “Valley of Death.” For a period, this single valley accounted for nearly one-fifth of all fighting in Afghanistan.
Staff Sergeant Thomas Waterman served there. He walked the patrols. He felt the heat. He heard the crack of bullets passing too close. He took a ricochet to the thigh—and was mistakenly reported as killed in action, the error nearly reaching his wife before a sergeant major gave him a personal cell phone to call home.
“The best form of therapy,” Waterman said, “is reuniting with those who experienced the same thing.”
