“I’M ONE OF THE LUCKIEST GUYS YOU’LL EVER MEET”: VIETNAM VETERAN SURVIVED BULLET TO THE SKULL—THEN BEAT JUNGLE ROT WITH OREGANO OIL

Chuck Deeters Pulled the Bullet Out of His Own Head

DETROIT, MI – The bullet passed clean through an arm-sized tree before it found Chuck Deeters.

The tree—ordinary, unremarkable, growing somewhere in the dense jungle thirty-five miles north of Saigon—absorbed most of the energy from a 7.62 round fired by an NVA soldier’s automatic weapon. What remained buried itself less than half an inch into the back of Chuck’s skull.

Part of it stuck out. He pulled it out himself.

“I’m one of the luckiest guys you’ll ever meet,” Chuck told the Van of Valor team, smiling. “That tree saved my life.”

But the war didn’t end there. For fifteen years after coming home, Chuck suffered from jungle rot on his feet—a persistent, painful fungal infection that no doctor could cure. Then a friend from the Lions Club happened to be a skin research scientist.
